What in here is real

Read this before you send a single deposit

This is a planning document written in July 2026 for a trip starting in December 2026. Nothing in it is a confirmed booking. Everything carries a status label so you always know whether you are looking at something an operator published, something estimated, or something that does not exist yet.

The single most important line on this page: New Year's Eve 2026/27 event programmes for Koh Samui have not been announced. Venues typically publish them in October–November. Every NYE detail below is a placeholder based on how the same venues ran previous years, and must be re-confirmed the moment tickets open.

The one thing that does not fit

The brief asks for 9 double-session days plus 3 diving days, a full day at TopCats, a New Year's Eve write-off and a recovery day. Inside 13 usable days on the island, that is arithmetically impossible without training on dive days and on 1 January — both bad ideas.

The plan below runs 7 doubles + 3 singles = 17 sessions. If you insist on 9 doubles, section 04 shows exactly what has to be sacrificed. Anyone who tells you all of it fits has not counted the days.

Status legend

Sourced

Published by the operator on their own site or an official listing, and checked in July 2026. Prices and schedules can still change.

Estimate

My figure, based on comparable market rates. Nobody has quoted this. Treat as a budgeting placeholder only.

Confirm

Not knowable yet, or too important to take on trust. Must be confirmed in writing before money moves.

Assumption

A planning decision I made because the brief left it open. Change it and the plan flexes.

Assumptions baked into this plan

  • 14 nights, not 13. Check-in 27 Dec, check-out 10 Jan, so the requested 10 January itinerary day has a bed under it. Dropping to a 9 Jan check-out saves roughly one night of villa cost and removes the departure buffer.
  • Departure from Budapest (BUD). No nonstop exists; every routing connects, and Bangkok Airways is the only airline flying nonstop BKK→USM, so the island leg is a single point of failure.
  • All five men are Open Water certified. Sail Rock requires it. If anyone is not, they do a Discover Scuba programme on a shallower profile instead — flag this now, not at the pier.
  • Exchange rates: €1 = ฿37, $1 = ฿32.50, ฿1 = 10.68 HUF. Re-check before you commit; a 5% swing on this trip is real money.
  • Mixed ability, no active fight camps. Sessions are technical-and-conditioning weighted, with controlled partner work rather than hard sparring. Say so if that is wrong — it changes the gym recommendation.
  • Nobody is flying within 24h of the last dive. Last dive is Friday 8 January. This is a hard constraint that shapes the back half of the trip.

Executive summary

The shape of the fortnight in 400 words

Base the group on the Plai Laem / Choeng Mon headland in a fully staffed five-bedroom estate villa. Everything the brief asks for sits inside a twenty-minute radius, and the airport is seven minutes away.

The fortnight is built as a real training block with the good stuff hung off it, rather than a holiday with some pad work bolted on. Week one loads up: three double days back to back, a fight night at Phetchbuncha on the Wednesday, then a deliberate taper into New Year's Eve and a completely empty New Year's Day. Week two is the reward week — Sail Rock, a private villa party, a beach club afternoon, TopCats, two more dive days — with training slotted around the fixed points rather than the other way round.

The training itself splits across two providers on purpose. A camp six minutes from the villa handles the disciplined morning work; private trainers come to the villa for afternoon clinch and pad rounds, which removes the single biggest failure point of every training holiday ever planned — the second drive of the day, in the heat, when nobody can be bothered.

Recovery is scheduled, not hoped for: sports massage every second day, contrast therapy and ice baths after every double, a physio on call from day two, and hard rules around alcohol before diving. The nights out are deliberately uneven — four big ones, three medium, seven quiet — because five men cannot do seventeen Muay Thai sessions and fourteen nights of Chaweng, and pretending otherwise is how trips end in a clinic.

The four fixed points

Thu 31 Dec — New Year's Eve. Book first, book hardest, book the moment tickets open in October.

Sun 3 Jan — Sail Rock. The best dive site in the Gulf. Dry the day before.

Wed 6 Jan — TopCats. Limited rods on the lake; the group books early or not at all.

Mon 4 Jan — the villa party. Needs written estate permission before you pay any villa deposit.

Weather reality

Koh Samui's rain runs opposite to Phuket's. November is the wettest month; by late December the northeast monsoon has usually retreated and the Christmas–New Year window is among the island's best weather of the year. December still averages meaningful rainfall, and tropical systems have entered the Gulf as late as around 20 December in past decades — so every outdoor day below carries a wet-weather fallback.

Base camp

Recommended area and the villa itself

Why Plai Laem / Choeng Mon and not Chaweng

Chaweng puts you in the noise. Plai Laem puts you seven minutes from it, on a headland with private coves, and seven minutes from the airport in the other direction. For a group that has to be on the pads at 07:30 and out until 03:00 on four separate nights, that geometry matters more than beachfront does.

  • Airport: 7–10 minutes. Arrival and departure days stop being days.
  • Training: a Muay Thai camp inside Plai Laem itself, plus three more within 20 minutes.
  • Nightlife: Chaweng in 15 minutes, Fisherman's Village in 15, both an easy chauffeured run home.
  • Diving: Bang Rak / Big Buddha pier is 10 minutes, which is where the good speedboat operators leave from.
  • Quiet: gated hillside estates with security, which is what makes a private party viable at all.

Runner-up areas: Chaweng Noi (closer to nightlife, hillier, noisier), Bophut / Bang Rak (great food, flatter, further from the good hill villas), Lipa Noi and the west coast (best sunsets, but 40 minutes from everything on this itinerary — wrong side of the island for this trip).

Samujana — Villa 30

First choice. Five king bedrooms, 10 adults. Rooftop living deck with an infinity pool that reads as merging with the horizon, and 360° views taking in Chaweng, Lamai, Choeng Mon, Plai Laem, Big Buddha and Koh Phangan. Private gym, full projector cinema, Nuvo sound throughout, rooftop BBQ deck, backup generators, uniformed security.

Samujana — Villa 26 / Villa 4

Alternates inside the same estate. Villa 26 runs two kitchens, a sunken lounge, a big L-shaped infinity pool, private cinema and full gym — it behaves more like a small resort. Villa 4 has one of the largest pools on the estate, a 3D projector cinema, and a gym with a Technogym Kinesis wall. Both sleep 10 in five kings.

Off-estate fallbacks

If Samujana is sold out over New Year — likely, book early — the Choeng Mon hillside has comparable five-bed staffed villas via Inspiring Villas, Elite Havens, Ministry of Villas and Forbes & Partners. Sangsuri (Choeng Mon) is the other genuinely large-group estate with a shared gym and beach access. Screen every alternate against the twelve-point checklist above before you shortlist it.

Six things to get in writing before the villa deposit clears

  • Outside guests. Exact permitted headcount for 4 January, plus whether names go on a gate list.
  • Amplified music and a DJ. Permitted? Until what time? Estates like this have neighbours and house rules.
  • External bar team / caterers, or must all F&B run through the in-house chef.
  • Muay Thai at the villa. Trainers coming on-site with pads and mats — permitted, and where.
  • Minimum stay and New Year surcharge. Peak is a 4-night minimum as standard; New Year weeks frequently run 7–10 nights and carry a supplement.
  • Security deposit and damage terms. Published range at this estate runs roughly USD 750–3,000 depending on villa; a party night may attract an uplift.

Fight camp

Two providers, one structure, no wasted drives

The structure the brief asks for — technical and conditioning in the morning, private coaching and clinch in the afternoon — works best split across two providers. One camp you drive to, one trainer who drives to you.

Sourced

Morning — Chor Ratchawat, Plai Laem camp

The decisive factor is the postcode: this camp has a site in Plai Laem itself, roughly six minutes from the villa. Private sessions run 60 minutes and start every 30 minutes between 07:00 and 19:00, Monday to Saturday — note the Sunday closure, which is why the plan puts diving on Sundays.

Published rates: ฿1,000 per hour 1-on-1, ฿700 per person for a group of 2–3, ฿9,000 for a ten-session pack. Coaches include the founder (25 years, 450 fights) and a Southern Thailand champion pad specialist. Booking cutoff is 12 hours before early slots, 2 hours otherwise.

Sourced

Afternoon — trainers to the villa

The second drive of the day is where training holidays die. Two operators will bring coaches and equipment to the villa instead. One publishes ฿1,200/hour for one person and ฿1,500/hour for two, explicitly covering Choeng Mon and Plai Laem. Another runs 1h15 sessions with professional fighters from a Bophut camp, at their gym or at your villa, from ฿800.

A third operator quotes on-site classes at ฿2,500 for the first hour and ฿1,000 per hour after, equipment delivered. And the estate itself lists Muay Thai trainers among its in-villa services — ask them to quote too, and compare.

Use it for: one or two big group sessions, strength work, and the ice bath. It is a 15–20 minute drive, so it does not want to be your daily base.

The load tape

BAR HEIGHT = TRAINING LOAD · COLOUR = DAY TYPE · CLICK TO JUMP
Double session Single session Event day Full rest Travel

If you insist on nine doubles

It can be done, but only by paying for it somewhere. Pick two of these three:

  • Train on 1 January. A light double instead of a rest day. You will be doing it on four hours' sleep and it will be the worst session of the trip.
  • Drop the third dive day to a half-day. Morning two-tank dive back at the pier by 13:00, then a 17:30 technical session — a six-hour surface interval before light land training. Defensible, not ideal.
  • Convert the beach club afternoon into a second session and move the beach club to a sunset-only visit on another day.

My recommendation: don't. Seventeen quality sessions in fourteen days with tropical heat, three dive days and a New Year's Eve is already a serious block for men who are not in an active fight camp. Volume is not the same as progress.

Where the money actually goes

The villa is 46% of the Contender budget and 32% of Legend. If the number frightens you, the villa is the only lever that moves it meaningfully — everything else combined is smaller. Dropping one night, or moving one street back from the hilltop, saves more than cutting all the nightlife.

Cheapest real savings

Book flights by September. Take the 13-night option and fly out on 9 January. Eat at the villa on eleven nights instead of nine — the chef is already paid for and Samui restaurant mark-ups over New Year are punishing. Share private trainers 2-to-1 rather than 1-to-1.

Where not to save

Diving, transport and the contingency. A cheap dive operator, a taxi you flagged down at 3 a.m., and no financial buffer for a cancelled flight are the three ways this trip actually goes wrong.

Ask specifically for the New Year minimum-stay and surcharge in the same email — do not let it surface later.

  • Early August
    Villa chosen, deposit paid

50% typically. Only pay once the party permissions, Muay Thai-at-the-villa permission and the security deposit figure are in the written confirmation. This is the anchor booking — everything else keys off the address.

  • August

  • October — the critical month
New Year's Eve goes on sale

Register interest with three venues in September so you get the email the day tickets drop. NYE tables at the good venues sell in days. Have the card ready and a decision already made about which venue you want.

  • October–November
    The rest of it

Beach club daybeds, restaurant reservations for 2 and 9 January, fight-night tickets, the DJ and bar team for 4 January, chauffeur for the fortnight, spa and massage block-booking, travel insurance with diving cover.

  • Late November
    Balances due

Most operators want the balance 60 days before arrival — that lands around 28 October for a 27 December arrival, so check each contract. Villa balances are commonly 30–60 days out.

  • December — final fortnight
    Reconfirm everything

Every supplier, by email, with dates and times restated. Confirm the fight cards for your chosen nights are running. Confirm the gyms' holiday schedules. Send certification cards to the dive operator. Send flight numbers to the transfer company.

How to run the money between five men

  • One organiser pays the big deposits and gets reimbursed immediately — not "at the end."
  • Open a shared pot (Splitwise, Revolut group, whatever) on day one, not day nine.
  • Everyone contributes an equal float for the in-resort kitty on arrival. Top up when it drops below a set floor.
  • Agree in advance who pays for what if someone drops out. Villa deposits are not refundable and five-way splits become four-way splits fast.
  • Carry real cash. Fishing guides, massage therapists, drivers and market stalls prefer it, and tipping culture matters.
  • Tell your banks you are in Thailand. Every trip has one man whose card gets frozen on day two.

What not to pack

Heavy weights kit — the villa has a gym and Superpro has everything else. Formal clothes — nowhere on this itinerary requires a jacket. Large quantities of protein powder, which will get you a conversation at customs and is available on the island. And do not bother with more than one pair of jeans; you will not wear them.

Risk & safety

The unglamorous section that saves the trip

Diving — the hard rules

  • No alcohol in the 24 hours before any dive. Not "a couple." None. Dehydration is a decompression-sickness risk factor and you will have been sweating through two sessions a day.
  • No diving after 8 January. Surfacing around 14:00 on the 8th gives roughly 48 hours before a Sunday-afternoon departure. Do not add a dive on the 9th to "use up" a spare day.
  • No hot tub, sauna or ice bath immediately after diving. That afternoon is stretch and hydrate only.
  • Confirm in writing: the operator's PADI status, TAT licence, liability insurance and recompression-chamber membership. One shortlisted operator publishes all four.
  • Check your travel insurance covers recreational scuba to your planned depth. Many standard policies do not, and many exclude combat sports too — which matters twice on this trip.
  • Accept a site change. If the captain says the Sail Rock crossing is marginal, the answer is yes. Sail Rock is exposed and the Gulf can turn.

Training injuries

  • Nobody spars hard. Controlled partner drills with shin guards, headgear and a mouthguard. A broken hand on day three ends someone's fortnight and they still have to watch.
  • Shin conditioning takes months, not a fortnight. Do not let anyone try to compress it.
  • Book the physio screening on day two, before anyone is sore, so there is a baseline to compare against.
  • Heat. Two sessions a day at 30 °C and high humidity is a different physiological load from home. Morning sessions at 07:30, afternoons after 16:30, never midday, and 3–4 litres of water plus electrolytes daily.
  • Wash and dry kit every day. Fungal skin infections spread through a shared gym bag faster than any of you would like to think about. The villa does laundry — use it.
  • The day after the villa party is a light day for a reason. Enforce it.

Travel and weather

  • Samui airport is a single-carrier chokepoint. Bangkok Airways is the only airline flying nonstop BKK–USM and it owns the airport. If the island leg cancels, there is no competitor to rebook onto.
  • Fallback route: ferry from Samui to Donsak plus road to Surat Thani airport (URT), allow 5–6 hours. Worth knowing about before you need it.
  • Leave three hours minimum between the USM→BKK arrival and the long-haul departure on 10 January.
  • Weather: Koh Samui's rain runs opposite to Phuket's. November is worst; late December is usually excellent. But December still averages meaningful rainfall and tropical systems have entered the Gulf as late as around 20 December historically. Every outdoor day in section 04 has a wet plan.
  • Roads. The ring road is winding and hilly, and the holiday fortnight is the island's busiest. Nobody rides a scooter. Nobody drives after drinking. That is what the chauffeur is for.

Group, privacy, medical

  • One nominated man per night out who stays functional, holds the driver's number and counts heads before leaving. Rotate it.
  • Share live locations in a group chat for the whole fortnight. Trivial to set up, occasionally the difference between an anecdote and an incident.
  • Bangkok Hospital Samui is the main private hospital, with a hyperbaric chamber network available on the island — know the address and put it in every phone before you land.
  • Villa privacy: gated estate, uniformed security, gate list for the party night. Do not post the villa's location publicly while you are in it.
  • Drinks. Watch them being poured, especially on Soi Green Mango. Standard advice, still worth writing down.
  • Thai law is strict on drugs and enforcement in tourist areas is real. This is not the place to be casual about it.

Alcohol and the training block, honestly

Four big nights, three medium ones and seven quiet ones is already an ambitious drinking schedule alongside seventeen Muay Thai sessions and six dives. Alcohol impairs sleep quality, glycogen replenishment and thermoregulation — all three of which you need in a tropical training block. The plan already builds a light day after every heavy night. If the group treats those light days as optional, the second week gets worse rather than better, and someone will pick up an injury doing something they could do easily on day three.
